Last Fall many lake homes were robbed and ND police have not apprehended anyone as a result of their investigation. Items stolen include: liquor/wine, valuables, stereo equipment, a gun, etc. The suspects appear to be young kids, possibly associated with a current lake dweller with a record of bad behavior and seen speeding on South Shore Rd almost daily during the summer months. I don't think very many residents know about it so I hope this post helps raise awareness. Recommend we not be passive victims and be more proactive by reporting suspicious activity when you see it, install better lighting (contrary to light pollution objectives on the lake), lock your doors, ask a neighbor to watch your place when you are away and encourage the police to take a more active role in patrolling North and South Shore Roads. Any other thoughts on preserving the quality of life on MMLake?

DRing,

I would agree with all of your points except the above. The lake and sky are so much better without the light pollution. If you go to the lake at night in late Fall or Winter, you will be amazed at how bright it is with all the lights out and just stars providing the illumination.

With just starlight, I've been able to make out all details of houses, etc across the lake. However, in the summer, with a neighbor across the bay who shines his spotlights out over the water, I can't see a thing except his spotlights. It's like shining a flashlight in someones face. Nothing else can be seen.

FWIW, there was a similar rash of break-ins over 20 years ago (we were victims). Thankfully they stopped and it didn't take more lights to make that happen.

Respectfully,

Maybe a compromise would be lights that activate by motion sensor and then shut themselves off after a period of time. On the roadside of the dwelling it shouldn't have much added effect to the light pollution. I believe the sensitivity can be adjusted as well, so that every chipmunk that goes by wouldn't set it off.
