I thought it might be interesting to keep a post running about the current water temperature at the lake. Posters could note the date and temperature reading they observed and the approximate location. Saturday 5/14/05 in 3.5 feet of water 30 feet from shore at the east end we measured 49 degrees F.

54 degrees on 21-May. 24 ft from Eastern shore, 2 feet under our dock.

Water temp guage on our boat also registered 54 when we were out for a ride.

With the weather forecast, I don't expect we'll see it change much for another week or so, except maybe down!

51 degrees first thing Saturday morning, already up to 55 on Sunday morning. Amazing what a day of sunshine will do! :)

May 29th, 2005, 06:28 PM
Now if we can only string about 5 or 6 of them in a row we'll be getting somewhere. I did get up the gumption to jump off the end of the dock for quick in and out dip. Knowing my friend next door had the hot tub up and running made the decision a little easier:p

As of 5/29, I'm getting 48 degrees at 3' depth in cove at western end of lake.

Saki-to-Me
June 1st, 2005, 08:48 PM
We had it measured at 56 by the time we left Monday 5/30, which was an improvement from the 51.5 that we started with Friday night. Hopefully these next two days will give it a good boost. I'll be up Friday to help open up the inlaw's cottage and that requires some in the water work putting in the dock.

East end @3PM Friday June 3rd. 63.5 degrees. Yeeha :)

Saki-to-Me

Anyone got a recent temp after the warm weekend? We didn't get back up over the weekend. :(

EagleTwo
June 5th, 2005, 09:20 PM
66 when we arrived on Friday evening. 72 at the height of day on Saturday. 68 mid-day on Sunday.

Again, this is on the east end of the lake, about 20' from shore, 2 feet down. Given the relatively shallow water here, and the lack of much wind to stir things up, I'm sure it's mostly just surface warmth. But there were a lot more people swimming today than any other day in 2005!

slalomer
June 8th, 2005, 02:48 PM
62 degrees last night (6/7/05) at 2.5' depth in cove at west end.

EagleTwo

72 when we arrived Friday night, 77 on Saturday afternoon. Swimming is very nice right now, as long as you don't dive too deep!

Saki-to-Me

My reading concurs with Eagletwo- 77 degrees when we left Sunday- taken at the usual spot. Just as I dont remember the water being so cold on Memorial Day weekend, I don't every remember it warming up this fast either.

Down to 63 on Friday morning! The temperature was taken at about 3 ft down. It was so warm a few days ago!

I got 61 degrees this AM (6/18) at 2' depth. That's at least a 10 degree drop from last weekend. There was a couple days when when the fog was rising off the lake this week, similar to cold early mornings in the fall when the warm lake is giving off its heat to the atmosphere. But it's way to early for that!

EagleTwo
June 20th, 2005, 07:48 AM
65 this morning at 6 AM. Mist was rising off the water since the air temp was only in the 50's. But the water temp came up a bit with the sun yesterday, and this week's weather should help increase it more.

EagleTwo
June 26th, 2005, 06:37 AM
75 on Saturday afternoon. The heat is on again! :D

I took my thermometer out this weekend. It was not legible due to 7 months of dirt & algae growing inside. Small areas of thin ice along shore in protected coves the last 2 mornings so water temp is in 30's. Lake is still 4-6" above normal freeze level.

EagleTwo

When we opened up on April 29th, I was getting readings between 47 and 50. It was a beautiful weekend (remember those? ;) ) and the sun had a noticable affect on the water temps during the day. But it was also very cold, below freezing, at night which dropped the temps to the lower range by morning.

Most readings taken at about 2-3'

The lake is about 4-5" above 'full lake'. It was at 649' elevation at dam yesterday and came up another inch overnight. Temp. is around 45 degrees. Streams are running very full as you might expect. Town recently maintained ditches & culverts causing a good sediment dump into lake, but this maintenance was long overdue.

slalomer
May 17th, 2006, 10:56 AM
The water rose several inches yesterday, to the highest point I've seen in 20 years. Lake elevation at the dam this AM was 649.4 feet. Lots of debris in water & lots of docks, walls etc. underwater.

Saki-to-Me
May 17th, 2006, 06:36 PM
Thanks for those updates on the water level. If you could continue to keep us posted periodically on the water level using the dam reference I'm sure many of people would appreciate it. I know I would. Thanks again.

The lake rose another 1.2" yesterday to 649.5' elevation at the dam, but did not rise overnight despite a 0.15" downpour last evening.

slalomer
May 22nd, 2006, 02:45 PM
The lake dropped a bit to 649.4' yesterday, but strong NW winds gusting to 25mph Monday is not good news for the shoreline. Temp. is about 48 degrees.

Lake is at 649.1' Thursday AM. Lake has dropped overnight, they are finally letting more water over the dam!

I measured 54 degrees at about 3.5 ft today. I don't have the exact measures that slolomer has, but I estimate the lake has dropped 6" since last weekend. There are still many docks around the lake that are under water or barely over. Please keep the boat wakes down.

On Monday afternoon, at ~4', I measured the water temperature to be 67 degrees. Quite a warm up over the weekend!

This is on the eastern end where the water is more shallow. I'm sure that mixing and cooler air temps of the past few days have caused it to drop again. But it was quite comfortable swimming on Monday afternoon.:D

EagleTwo
June 5th, 2006, 12:51 PM
The cool weather and rain dropped the temps again. I measured between 56 and 57 most of the weekend.

Seems to be about at the same place it was this time last year.

81.7 yesterday afternoon, again 3' down under my dock on the east end.

I'm sure the difference has something to do with the relatively shallow depths here on the eastern end of the lake coupled with the strong, warm sunshine of the past few days.

When the wind mixed things up on Saturday, it did drop some. But I've been getting consistent readings of about 59-60 for the past day.

I've attached a Word file that shows our Tuesday water sampling temperature data. We measure the water temperature at the surface, and in 1 meter increments down to 15 meters. Thought maybe some of you might be interested. I guess the message here is, if you forget your cooler, just hang your sodas/beers on your anchor line at about 45 feet down and they'll get nice and cool really fast. :)
I went diving last Thursday and my computer read 43 degrees! Our refrigerator is set at 42.

Took my first readings of 08 yesterday. low to mid-50's early in the day, it almost hit 60 in the afternoon. But the latter was in a shallow area on a beautiful, warm, sunny day. I'm sure once the sun went down and the water mixed around, the low to mid-50's readings are more accurate.

I'll have my permanent setup in place next weekend.

After getting readings in the mid-70's for most of this cool, rainy summer, I started seeing the decline during the past week or so.

Saw my first below 70 reading on the 10th. It then spent a week going above/below 70 depending on the time of day. Now it seems to be heading down with the very cold nights.

I guess summer is really over....

I got about 64 degrees on the 20th. There was a lot of steam rising from the lake the night before; and that's summer's warmth leaving the relatively warm lake into the cold atmosphere.

I'll be pulling my temp probe this weekend so this will be my final post for 2008. I've been at the lake most of this week and getting water temp readings between 59 and 61.

We are still getting good solar gain during the day. Most mornings I had readings at 59. By mid-afternoon it would be back to 61.

But, it's been a warm week. The downward trend will continue until about next April

The main body of the lake iced in Friday night. Unlike ice-in due to a large snowfall, it is a very clear ice that gives the lake a black appearance. I'm sure it is only an inch or two thick. Protected coves iced in some time ago and have a milky ice.

EagleTwo

Thanks for the update.

We were at the lake over New Years, on the eastern end of the lake. The wind was blowing all the ice chunks in our direction, but the majority of the lake was still open due to wind and waves. The part of the lake on the eastern end that was ice was a very unstable jigsaw of pieces with open water between.

But, it was bitterly cold and even at 8 degrees you could see "heat" steam rising off the open water. It was clear that the whole thing would freeze over when the wind died down. Sounds like that happened.

The countdown to ice-out begins...

I got my setup in the water a few weeks ago but had the first chance to capture readings this past weekend. As usual, on the eastern shore, about 3 feet down, under my dock, about 24' from the shoreline.

The readings for the past 10 days or so have varied up and down between 57 and 64. Now sitting about 60.

Not surprising given the cool, rainly weather we've been having. Air temps and water temps are about the same right now.

Happy New Year!
The lake now has a very thin skim layer of ice with a couple inches of snow over about 90% of the surface. Most of it iced over on the night of 12/30/09. There's about 6" of snow on the ground, but about twice that much on the higher terrain and north facing slopes. More on the way!

We got about 6" of windblown snow last weekend. The ice on the lake is not safe! About 1-2" of 'snow ice'. Ice is fine in a few protected coves that have been iced over for weeks, but ice on main lake is mostly thin & variable.

With a fair amount of help from my brother-in-law who does computer systems for a living, we pieced it together with the following. It took a few hours to get it up and running but it is pretty cool. I have an interior temperature probe in the cottage and intend to add an outdoor air temp as well. Cost per probe is very low (~$5). Although I haven't tried it yet, it looks easy to add a wind speed/direction sensor and a video camera. It would be interesting if others on the lake got up and running to see variations. Glad to answer questions either through the forum or PM.
