Hello,

My username was choosen based on my passion, despite recent performances, for Boston College athletics.

I graduated from BC, as did my dad, hence the name given to my parents place, "Eagles Nest". We've lived on the lake since the early 70's when I was in my teens.

My family and I were lucky enough to purchase our own place on the Eastern shore several years ago. Now another generation is learning to love Merrymeeting as much as I do.

Ahhh Merrymeeting………
I’ve been going to Merrymeeting since 1966, when I was in first grade. I met my wife there, her parents also have a place on the lake.
I enjoy water skiing, wakeboarding, sailing, windsurfing, tubing, boating, hiking, blueberry picking, canoeing, king of the raft, kick the can, capture the flag, badminton, horse shoes, snorkeling, stargazing, boat floats, the rope swing, water volley ball, Frisbee, campfires, ping-pong tournaments, fishing, laying out on an air mattress in mid July, making floats for “the Parade”, snoozing in a hammock, shooting off fireworks, snowmobiling, playing board games and hanging out with friends. And least I forget Happy Hour. These, and more, are the things I enjoy and continue to do with my family at my favorite place….
:)

oh man.... Merrymeeting, such a great place. I like doing everything that Paul does but some of my favorites are: Mountian Biking (Downhill and Freeride), Wakeboarding, Guitar, Lacrosse, Summer and everything Paul listed. I cant wait to go up there. There should be some Downhill races around NH and Vermont this summer if I can ever get a RIDE
Oh well. I'll ride my bike if i have too. This is gonna be a good summer.

Merrymeeting ............ really Great place. I enjoy a lot of the stuff saki-to-me and downhillracer enjoy. Some of my favorites are snorkeling, floating, king of the raft, rc boats, hanging out with friends, water tubing, campfires even though I never actually stay and sit at the campfire :D. I enjoy capture the flag, kick the can, sitting in the hot tub, boat rides, bad mitten, water volleyball, boat floats, candy from the marina :D LOL, and a lot of other things. Those are the things I enjoy doing in the summer at Merrymeeting. Some other things I like to do are surf the web, Ski, snowmobile, skate, and play sreet hockey. My Dad and his parents bought our camp on the east end in 1965. I think the cost for the camp and property combined was around $10,000! I was introduced to Merrymeeting just after I was born in the early 1980's. The camp and Merrymeeting Lake were a huge part of my childhood, from before I can remember until my extended family was forced to sell it in 1998 because of high property taxes and other reasons. Even though we sold the camp before I entered high school, I made a lifetime of memories on Merrymeeting Lake. There are too many to list in this forum, but here are a few that stand out:

Blueberry picking on Mt. Jesse

Fishing for smallmouth bass at night in Cedegren's Cove

Trying to start the 6-hp Mercury outboard that was 30 years old at the time

Netting suckers in Goodwin and Peter Brooks with my cousin and uncles

Learning to swim by paddling the great distance of 5 feet from one rock to another

Hearing my Dad say "there are no fish in this lake" for the 100th time

Catching frogs in the swamp

Biking around the lake and around Mt. Jesse

Hiking the Singing Waters Trail

Playing cards on rainy days

Sardines, Kick the can, and capture the flag

Shooting fireworks and sparklers off the dock, and watching fireworks in Wolfeboro

Stargazing

Getting up at 5:00am to go fishing, and trying in vain to wake up my Dad

Watching my grandfather laugh from the boat, while my cousin and I got thrown from the tube

And too many more to list...

Even though it's been 7 years since we sold the camp, I still think about Merrymeeting Lake and the great times we had there. We've been back a few times to go hiking and fishing, but it's just not the same. It's hard for me to go back and realize we don't have the camp anymore, and it's doubly hard for my Dad who spent 35 springs, summers, and falls there. It's nice to find this website, and know that people enjoy Merrymeeting as much as we did. It's truly a special place.

....the more they stay the same.

While I can only guess how sad it must be to have sold the place, I can tell you that your memories remain, and continue on into another generation. We're also on the east end (Millen's place), and your list is one that could still be generated by my children. In fact my son commented on it shortly after you posted.

Blueberry picking on Mt. Jesse"

Nothing like fresh blueberry pancakes after an early morning picking session!

Fishing for smallmouth bass at night in Cedegren's Cove

(see postings from last summer of Camp Pride fishing day)

Trying to start the 6-hp Mercury outboard that was 30 years old at the time

Well, ours is 9-hp and over 40 years old. Amazing how well it still starts

Netting suckers in Goodwin and Peter Brooks with my cousin and uncles

can't say I've had the pleasure. :)

Learning to swim by paddling the great distance of 5 feet from one rock to another

ours have names...."boys rock" and "girls rock"

Hearing my Dad say "there are no fish in this lake" for the 100th time

That's Mikey's line...

Catching frogs in the swamp

or mosquitoes!

Biking around the lake and around Mt. Jesse

The boys do the biking. I run.

Hiking the Singing Waters Trail

Where is this?

Playing cards on rainy days

The adults anyway. The kids are more inclined to play video games :(

Sardines, Kick the can, and capture the flag

Come by pretty much anytime after dusk in July or August and there will be a game going on...

Shooting fireworks and sparklers off the dock, and watching fireworks in Wolfeboro

every year!

Stargazing

out in the boat....it's the best!

Getting up at 5:00am to go fishing, and trying in vain to wake up my Dad

Now I know why I never took up fishing!

Watching my grandfather laugh from the boat, while my cousin and I got thrown from the tube

driving by grampie's house to get the cousins to throw from the tube

And too many more to list...

campfires, reading a book on the dock, sunsets, evening cruises....

Thanks. Great post!

While saki-to-me was splashin' around in ankle deep wata', I was cuttin' trees & then helpin' build. (That's OK, he makes up for it now, :D ). We bought one of Cedegren's unimproved lots. There isn't quite any other place to "escape" from the real world & seem so far removed from the zoo as MM Lake. Good friends, good times, it don't get better 'n that.

It's great to read about everyone's experiences at MML. I've been going there my whole life (almost 40 years!) and love it all year round. My grandparents bough one of the first lots on South Shore Road back in the 40's - you just can't beat the sunsets every evening. I would agree that the more things change the more they stay the same.

Hi Mike,

I just got into paintball last spring! It's a lot of fun. I saw a sign for a paintball place in New Durham -- It appears to be up on the ridge somewhere.
I went looking for it but couldn't find it. Have you or anyone else checked it out?

Bob

My father bought a lot in 1960 or 1961, built the camp by '64 or so. My brother and sister and I now own it. I have lived all around the country over the years; whenever I have been back to New England, I get up to the lake whenever I can. I live in MA now, so that's more often than it it used to be, but not often enough!

Here is something we used to do as kids: the golf ball game. A golf ball will sink very slowly in water. One person jumps of a raft, releasing a couple of golf balls as he falls. When they land in the water, they get lost in the mass of bubbles - the balls look just like bubbles, but are slowly sinking instead of rising. Others swimming in the water below try to find them in the bubbles to score. The raft we used was in about 20 feet of water, so if you missed the balls, somebody had to down to get them!
